Homage to Grappelli FLY 5

Chris Garrick violin - John Horler piano - Alec
Dankworth
double bass - Allan Ganley drums

Recorded in June 2007 in deepest South Oxfordshire, Homage to Grappelli is the first album by the eponymous band and the product of a project which has been sitting on the burner at the back for... 32 years! Yes the seeds were first sown when the infectious Grappelli style first swept over a six year old Chris Garrick, making this album a true immaculate preconception.

"Garrick plays marvellously bringing his own stamp to Grappelli's relaxed lyricism, without losing the maestro's sense of vibrancy... "
THE GUARDIAN

"Chris Garrick tends to play jazz rather than gypsy jazz as, of course, did Stephane Grappelli"

Flying Blue Whale 2005

"Exhilarating" Observer

reviews

Recorded May 2005. "We cut 80 minutes of music and for the first time I find myself with a double album on my hands. NOT something which figured in my original plan!! Anyway we're very excited about this one, to put it mildly, not least because it's been well over a year on the back-burner. The extra waiting time allowed newer material to find it's way into the studio, and for the older tunes to evolve too. Dave, Tom & Ole all give staggering performances, some of their lifetime-best I reckon actually. Neil Craig plays some very tasty tabla on 2 songs, and guitar thaumaturge John Etheridge works his magic on 'There She Is'. I used violin, viola & electric instruments throughout and had a ball especially with some new wacky sounds and loops! I'd characterise these sessions as profound - more so than past times - the atmosphere was a real blend of extremes. There's alot of fun to be heard in there along with the darker moments. I hope these first impressions help to whet your appetite and that you enjoy the music as much as we have had pleasure making it." CG

Four Spirits FLY 1
Flying Blue Whale 2001

...eagerly awaited follow-up to Different Strokes

reviews

Four Spirits features a combination of original, contemporary and standard repertoire, ranging from Irving Berlin's Change Partners to Pete James's Seascape. Whereas the standard end of things are live acoustic performances, the contemporary pieces have been recorded using the full capability of the studio, with added percussion, synths and voices. Top engineer Matt Butler, (ex. Paul McCartney, Dire Straits, Michael Jackson) in giving his considerable expertise and energy, led to the most ambitious ideas being wonderfully realised on this CD.

"Miss this at your own risk."
